Ultra Dragon Ball Wiki

Broly (ブロリー Burorī) is a Saiyan from Universe 7 and the son of Paragus. He is the latest incarnation of the character Broly, reworked into the main Dragon Ball continuity by Akira Toriyama and first appearing in the 2018 film Dragon Ball Super: Broly.

Unlike his original non-canon counterpart from the Dragon Ball Z films, the canon Broly is portrayed as a misunderstood and emotionally unstable warrior with immense untapped power. After a traumatic childhood and years of isolation, Broly is forced into battle against Goku and Vegeta, leading to a cataclysmic confrontation that cements him as one of the strongest characters in the franchise.

Appearance[]

Broly's appearance differs greatly from his Dragon Ball Z movies counterpart, although it retains the same general concept; while still tall, he is noticeably shorter and is more muscular, including having noticeably tanner skin compared to his counterpart. Broly's hairstyle is also different; while it's still spiky and reaching his upper back, his counterpart had hair split down in the middle while Broly's hair is more overgrown. He has a scar across his left cheek, left bicep, and an "X"-shaped scar on his left pectoral reaching over his left shoulder and two smaller ones on the upper-left of his abdomen, which is his most notable feature. His standard facial expression also appears sterner than in the counterpart (who appeared melancholic when not unhinged). As a child, he lets his tail hang out, although it was removed by Paragus.)

In his Wrathful state, Broly’s eyes glow yellow and his muscles expand slightly, accompanied by a golden-green aura. When he transforms into a Super Saiyan, his hair turns gold. In his Full Power Super Saiyan form, his hair becomes bright green and his eyes turn blank white. This state visually resembles the Legendary Super Saiyan form from the original Dragon Ball Z films.

Personality[]

Broly is a quiet and kind-hearted individual who struggles to control his emotions due to years of emotional and physical abuse from his father, Paragus. He is socially inexperienced and easily overwhelmed, particularly when under pressure or during battle. Despite his raw battle instinct, Broly does not enjoy violence or conflict and only fights when forced into a corner.

Unlike his non-canon counterpart, who was portrayed as sadistic and bloodthirsty with an unhealthy obsession with Goku, this version of Broly is far more nuanced. He fights due to confusion and trauma, not because of malice or cruelty. After being rescued and befriended by Cheelai and Lemo, he begins to open up emotionally, especially when shown genuine kindness and empathy.

Biography[]

Background[]

Broly was born with an abnormally high power level that exceeded even Prince Vegeta's. King Vegeta, fearful of Broly's potential, exiled him to the harsh and barren Planet Vampa. Paragus defied the order and accompanied his son, planning to raise him as a tool of revenge against King Vegeta.

On Vampa, Broly grew up in isolation with only his father for company. He briefly bonded with a creature named Ba, but Paragus severed their bond by injuring the beast, believing it to be dangerous. This incident marked the beginning of Broly's emotional repression and deep inner conflict.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly[]

Decades later, Broly is discovered by Cheelai and Lemo, two members of the Freeza Force. They bring Broly and Paragus to Frieza, who manipulates them into joining his campaign against Goku and Vegeta. On Earth, Broly is forced into combat and proves to be an overwhelmingly powerful opponent. He initially fights Vegeta and rapidly adapts to his fighting style, steadily growing stronger.

When pushed to the brink, Broly taps into his Wrathful state and eventually transforms into a Super Saiyan after witnessing the death of his father at the hands of Frieza. In his berserk state, he overpowers both Goku and Vegeta in their Super Saiyan Blue forms. To stop him, Goku and Vegeta fuse into Gogeta. Even then, Broly pushes the fusion to the edge, eventually transforming into his Super Saiyan Full Power form.

As Gogeta prepares to finish Broly with a Full-Force Kamehameha, Cheelai uses the Dragon Balls to wish Broly back to Vampa. Broly is saved, and later, Goku visits him, bringing supplies and offering to train him. Goku tells Broly to call him "Kakarot," signaling mutual respect and a possible future alliance.

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero[]

Broly appears training on Beerus’ Planet alongside Goku and Vegeta. Under the supervision of Whis, Broly is learning to suppress and control his rage in order to harness his power more efficiently. Though he still struggles to restrain himself during sparring, his progress indicates that he is growing both as a fighter and as a person.

Power[]

Broly is considered one of the most powerful characters in Dragon Ball, with combat potential that rivals and even exceeds that of fused warriors and gods. His power increases rapidly during battle, and he adapts to his opponents' techniques almost instantly. He possesses a unique mutation that grants him infinite power growth, making him stronger the longer he fights.

His Wrathful form gives him access to the power of a Great Ape without needing to transform, while his Super Saiyan Full Power form pushes his strength to god-tier levels. Unlike trained fighters such as Goku and Vegeta, Broly relies on raw instinct and overwhelming force. However, his lack of formal training leaves him vulnerable to experienced opponents, which is why he later seeks guidance to master his abilities.

Abilities[]

Broly is capable of performing a wide range of powerful techniques. He can release standard ki blasts to strike from a distance. He can generate the Eraser Cannon, a large, green sphere of energy launched from his palm with explosive power. The Blaster Meteor allows him to unleash a rapid-fire barrage of ki blasts to overwhelm his foes.

One of his most devastating techniques is the Gigantic Roar, a massive energy wave released during a scream of rage. He can also use the Gigantic Breath to fire a powerful beam from his mouth. Broly has a unique ability to mimic and learn fighting styles mid-battle, a technique referred to by fans as Counter Rush. He also has the standard Saiyan ability to fly using his ki.

His Wrathful State is a unique transformation that gives him access to Great Ape power while maintaining his base form. His Super Saiyan form grants him the traditional golden hair and enhanced strength, while his Super Saiyan Full Power form turns his hair green and gives him a berserker-like strength that grows infinitely during battle.

Forms and Transformations[]

In his Base Form, Broly retains an exceptional amount of power and is stronger than many trained Super Saiyan fighters.

His Wrathful form allows him to tap into the power of a Great Ape without transforming. In this state, his muscles grow larger, his eyes glow yellow, and his aura becomes chaotic and golden.

When he transforms into a Super Saiyan, his hair turns golden and his power increases drastically. This transformation is triggered by extreme rage, particularly after witnessing Paragus’ death.

His final and most powerful state is Super Saiyan Full Power, often compared to the Legendary Super Saiyan form. In this form, his hair turns bright green, his muscles bulk up significantly, and his eyes turn completely white. His strength in this form is considered limitless, increasing continuously as the fight drags on.

Comparisons to Original Broly[]

The original non-canon Broly from the 1993 film was a sadistic and cruel Saiyan who displayed little emotion beyond rage. He was obsessed with Goku due to a childhood trauma and had no moral compass, destroying planets without remorse. In contrast, the Dragon Ball Super version of Broly is quiet, emotionally repressed, and lacks control rather than being evil.

The original Broly’s power came from his birthright as the Legendary Super Saiyan, while the new Broly’s strength results from natural Saiyan evolution and mutation. The old version had no allies, while the new Broly forms strong bonds with Cheelai and Lemo, and later gains Goku’s trust.

While both versions display similar visual traits in their final forms, the Dragon Ball Super version has a more grounded origin, emotional depth, and a potential path to redemption.

Trivia[]

Akira Toriyama redesigned Broly for Dragon Ball Super: Broly after acknowledging the character's immense popularity among fans, despite not having created the original version.

Broly's green hair in his Super Saiyan Full Power form is unique to him and visually distinguishes him from other Super Saiyans.

In Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Broly is seen laughing and training with Goku and Vegeta, showing significant emotional growth and development.

Despite his immense strength, Broly has never killed a single character onscreen in the Dragon Ball Super continuity.

The pelt Broly wears around his waist is made from the ear of Ba, the creature he once befriended on Planet Vampa, symbolizing his lost innocence.
